MEDICINAL PLANTS IN CASE OF ADHD
PEPPERMINT (Mentha x piperita)
Peppermint has bright green leaves, which contain menthol and are refreshing and stimulating: menthol stimulates the metal faculties and keeps us awake.
Peppermint essential oil is a stimulant of the central nervous system: this mental stimulation is very useful for ADHD. Peppermint contains all the freshness of the fresh mint leaves. People throughout history have told us about mint’s ability to refresh the mind. Pliny wrote: “the scent alone restores and refreshes the spirit”. The fresh stimulation of the brain by the peppermint means in scientific language that the “flow” and the activity of neurotransmitters are stimulated. Acetylcholine is likewise stimulated, which is the neurotransmitter for memory and recall. This memory is used for the reasoning and decision-making capacities of our brain.
Peppermint has a soothing effect when you have mental or intellectual difficulties, such as ADD and ADHD. The ADD type feels his or her individuality threatened and struggles with feelings of inferiority. This personality type needs to regain confidence and learn to relax, which comes easily with peppermint.
BASIL (Ocimum basilicum L.)
Basil is a culinary herb, that originates in the Far East: India, South-East Asia and China. It was brought to Europe via the Silk Route. It is much used in Mediterranean cookery.
Basil has long been held to have effects on the nervous system. It has a strengthening effect on it and can be considered as a moderating influence. Basil boosts the efficiency of the brain and has a regulating effect: it reduces excesses and makes up for deficits. Blockages in the neurotransmission arise in cases of ADHD, in both children and adults, in situations of loss of concentration and attention problems. These lead to a reduction in learning ability, remembering becomes difficult and much is forgotten. The components of basil cause an improved flow of the neurotransmitters through the nerve cells, so that an instruction, desire, thought or intention is actually realised, where beforehand it would have vanished into the void. This realisation is so satisfying that the patient becomes calmer and happier. It’s striking how a stimulant herb can be have a soothing effect at the same time!
ROSMARY (Rosmarinus officinalis)
It is a old remedy for enhancing memory performance. It works as a stimulant and boosts attention, helping to deal with concentration problems and forgetfulness. Recent research has in fact shown that one of the active ingredients (carnosic acid) can protect the brain from decay. Rosemary is enlivening and stimulates bodily functions: someone who feels depressed can benefit from the stimulating effects of rosemary. Rosemary makes the mind clearer and free of confusion and doubt, stimulates sensitivity and enhances creativity by relieving fatigue.
JATAMANSI (Nardostachys jatamansi DC)
Jatamansi is an Indian plant of which the roots have medicinal uses. They contain an essential oil, which has been known and valued for thousands of years as NARDUS: a biblical salve.
Jatamansi has a long tradition of being used to combat stress and nerves. It stimulates the creation off serotonin, the neurotransmitter of the emotions, and of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter of the memory (in the brain). This balanced operation is useful for ADHD and related complaints. In recent studies, Jatamansi was labelled a brain activator in cognitive medicine. It is used in stress situations with nervousness, fear and confusion and opens the way to more intense brain activity and improved mental functions.
NUTMEG (Myristica fragrans Houtt.)
The nutmeg tree grows in a tropical, hot and humid climate, at low altitudes and in shady areas. There are large nutmeg plantations spread all over the tropical world.
The main component, myristicin, acts on the brain with a supporting function for the brain cells. It stimulates the auto-repair function of the brain. An extract from these nuts stimulates brain function and improves cognitive performance. By boosting the flow of brain impulses, it enhances perseverance to complete a task or work.
