MEDICINAL PLANTS IN CASE OF FEAR
SPIKENARD (Nardostachys jatamansi DC.)
Spikenard is an Indian plant from which the root is used for its medicinal characteristics. This aromatic herb originates mainly from North-India and China. Mostly in Ayurveda, a very old Indian medicine, spikenard is used for inner agitation and weak nerves.
The spikenard root is rich in an essential oil and contains jatamanson, a relaxing and calming substance.
Fear is one of the most important symptoms in our present society, which makes spikenard one of the most useful plants!
Fear is a feeling strengthened by the daily news of threat and criminality. Danger and fear go hand in hand.
Spikenard is a plant of the “good feeling“, because it stimulates the function of the neurotransmitters: these are molecules that play an important role in the signal transfer (electric stimuli) between nerve cells and our nerve system.
After taking spikenard-herb the content of serotonin increases, the neurotransmitter of the mind, and of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter of memory (in the brain). Spikenard improves the mental capability and is relaxing at the same time.
Spikenard can be used in stressful situations with nervousness, fear and confusement.
As a sedative spikenard can be used during the day without any danger: you will not feel drowsy, but you will experience a feeling of rest and relaxation.
Your fears will decrease and you will feel much better and more confident about yourself.
Very useful for students during the cramming and exam period, as preparation of the driving exams and during other periods in which enough confidence has to be shown.
PASSION FLOWER (Passiflora incarnata L.)
A second plant that can be taken in case of fear is the passion flower. Passion flower with its beautiful purple flowers was used long time ago by the North-American Indians, the Maya’s and the Aztecs for its medicinal qualities.
Passion flower is in the first place a remedy against fear, stress and is calming.
It can also be taken before going to bed, as a soporific and tranquilizer. The elements (alkaloids and flavonoids) can, depending on the taken dose, be considered a tranquilizer, sedative or a remedy against fear. Because they are safe they can be taken during the day as well as the night, in combination with other plants like spikenard. Passion flower is one of the best herbal remedies for the nerve system!
Recent research shows that an extract of the passion flower is very active against fear because of the function on GABA (Gamma-AminoButyric Acid) in our brains. GABA is called the sedating neurotransmitter.
Fear is one of the most important plagues of our society and is the cause of an ineffable amount of psychical and physical complaints.
Passion flower treats most of these complaints and suppresses the fear in a very efficient, complex and thorough way.
